A caution to young theologians

So Andrea had to read this little book called "Little Exercises for Young Theologians" for her systematic theology class. She loved the book and, quite wisely, passed it on to me. The book is old, written by a famous German theologian. The thrust of the book is the idea that studying theology is actually quite dangerous, though absolutely necessary, and, therefore, must be done thoughtfully and prayerfully. If theology is studied without prayer or thought it quickly puffs up and ruins spirituality. Allow me to share with you a quote that struck me:

"Speaking figuratively, the study of theology often produces overgrown youths whose internal organs have not correspondingly developed."

My how succinct, to the point, and true. I see this all the time, most of all in my own life, where the study of theology grows the brain, but does not touch the soul. If our study of theology, or even the scriptures themselves, does not penetrate our hearts and touch our souls, then we will most certainly become overgrown youths with undeveloped organs. Why am I, as a theological student, not more loving because of the theology I study? This, literally, grieves me. Thoughts?
