Now, I realize you are a theologically astute bunch, therefore, let me build a little bit of foundation here. The Bible teaches that care of ones body is part and parcel of being a good steward of God's gifts. Our bodies are the temple of the Spirit and Paul does teach us that physical training has value. Moreover, scientific studies have confirmed that regular exercise increases energy levels, as well as releases endorphins, or "happy hormones."
What is my point? I simply want to prod all of us along in our exercise endeavors. I guarantee that you will love to workout or run, in a month, if you start today. Are you lacking motivation. Here is a thought; enter a 5k. Once you put down the money you are committed, so you better prepare. On the other side of things, you could grab your wife, or a friend, and go to the gym together. Do anything, do something, do it all for your joy in the glory of God!
P.S. On the flip-side, if 2008 was a year of body obsession or struggle with physical image, then let me encourage you to see your body through God's eyes. I've been at this place, so I understand your pain. Your justification is not written on the scale. We are justified by God's gracious work, through Christ's death on the cross, resurrection and our faith. Allow your heart to soar in the gospel and take a few days off from the gym, it may be the most important spiritual fast you have ever done.
